JCL Online Conference 2024- Summary and Talks

This year, we ran our annual conference on May 25th, hosting 5 speakers who presented to teachers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.

The conference was opened by Lindsay Warwick who spoke about  Helping learners to recognise and achieve success in speaking activities

Talks presented by our Senior Teachers and trainers Adam Tatar, Katka Hrušková, Yevheniia Valova and Pavel Pokorný all related to this year’s motto, Languages Are Meant to Be Spoken. The speakers shared their views on the difference between natural conversation and conversation lessons, on the role of the teacher, materials we can use for lesson planning and in the class, and last but not least on the students, their role, benefit and confidence they gain from the classes.

The conference was closed by a panel discussion led by our host of the conference, Kara Magalhaes.

We really appreciate everyone who took the time to attend the conference and listen to what our speakers had to say, and we hope that everyone found it an enjoyable event. If you have any suggestions or comments you’d like to share with us, please let us know in this feedback form.

You can watch Lindsay Warwick’s talk here. In her talk, Lidsay focused on how to design tasks so that students experience successful communication in class. You can check out Lindsay's presentation here.

Thank you for your inspirational presentation:)

Adam Tatar talked about the need for purpose (and structure) in conversation lessons so that we don't solely speak but develop our students' language skills. Spoiler alert! It's not just about speaking, we work on all of them, including grammar. You can access Adam's presentation here. You can watch his talk here.

phenomenal talk -- so useful.

In her talk, Katka Hrušková focused on our students' self-esteem, on how to analyse our students' confidence in language lessons and how to boost it. She shared 10 tips, both for lesson planning and lesson presentation, with us - check out her presentation here. You can watch Katka's talk here.

Katka -- as always, you are a fount of wisdom. this was very helpful. ty

Yevheniia Valova talked about balancing the natural (conversation) and the artificial (lesson) so that our students learn and improve prompted by pictures, music, or diving into grammar board games. In her talk, she compares language lesson with how we naturally develop our children's conversation skills. If you’re interested in her presentation, click here. You can watch Yevheniia's talk here.

Thank you for the great tips

In his talk, Pavel Pokorný walked us through two of his lesson plans prepared mainly using AI tools - ChatGPT and twee. He compared the result with old-school (T's brain only) approach and showed us both the pros and cons of using AI. If you’re interested in his presentation, click here. You can watch Pavel's talk here.

Thank you for your insight and amazing ideas

In the panel discussion on the purpose of languages (they're meant to be spoken, actually),  Kara Magalhaes asked questions that linked all the conference talks together. The panelists were asked about how conversation doesn't equal solely speaking, how to make our students speak more (if they're lazy), and much more. You can watch the panel discussion here.

Thank you very much for this conference - interesting topics, useful tips, overall - graet experience :)
